Friction clutches and brakes have long been used to regulate drive speeds and loads in most industrial applications. However, Magneclutches® and Magnebrakes® control tension, torque and acceleration with no wearing parts. There are no gears to grab and no pads to wear out.
The magnetic particle clutch was developed by the Vickers Corporation in 1948. It was first used as a speed control on generators for the Navy. Sperry later refined the control and its applications. Now, Magne continues the development of these magnetic particle products by improving product design, expanding applications and providing outstanding service.
The Magneclutch® consists of only two moving parts, the inner rotating member, called the rotor, and the outer rotating member, called the drive cylinder. These rotating members do not touch. Each is cantilevered on two separate bearing sets. When the coil is energized, a magnetic medium forms chains between the rotor and drive cylinder and transmits torque. The transmitted torque varies with the magnetic field's strength. Since its clutching action is entirely magnetic - and without friction dependent mechanisms - the Magneclutch® retains operational stability throughout its operating range over a practically unlimited lifetime.
In Addition, The Magneclutch® Offers These Benefits:
- Automatic Tension Control
- Simplified Material Handling
- Precise Acceleration
- Controlled Repeatability
- Lowest Cost
- Best For Test
Like the Magneclutch® the Magnebrake® offers complete control. Managed and regulated braking enables you to fully exploit the brake's verified capabilities for superior power regulation. Since the Magnebrake's® action does not involve unstable friction, it provides many new quality advantages, including:
- Continuous Slip
- Uniform Reversing
- Uniform Intermittent Motion
- Tension Control
- Temperature Stability
- Precise Loading
- Clean
- Smooth
- Quiet
Magne Corporation offers both clutches and brakes:
Magneclutch
The Magneclutch Advantage
The Magneclutch provides complete control because magnetic particle action makes torque output directly proportional to coil current, independent of slip speed. The Magneclutch makes equipment more controllable and stable, longer lasting and easier to maintain.
Automatic Tension Control
The infinitely smooth Magneclutch has no starting peaks. It allows precise winding and unwinding of material under constant tension, taper tension or constant torque, using all types of digital or analog closed loop systems to automatically maintain control tension.
Simplified Material Handling
A Magneclutch simplifies material handling. Its soft starting through infinitely smooth torque control eliminates load shifting, swinging, banging and material damage.
Precise Acceleration
Magneclutch simplifies acceleration of large inertia loads. Acceleration times and forces can be precisely limited with excellent repeatability.
Operational Stability
Since its clutching action is entirely magnetic and without friction-dependent mechanisms, the Magneclutch retains operational stability throughout its operating range over a practically unlimited lifetime.
Quiet
Unlike conventional clutches, the noiseless Magneclutch is welcome in quiet areas like offices, labs and medical facilities. With no sliding or slapping parts, the Magneclutch is a valuable tool in the machine designer's portfolio.
Controlled Repeatability
A Magneclutch is ideal for applications with extreme cycle demands. It provides millions of exact stable cycles under complete control with the smoothest starts and the most gentle stops possible for machinery.
Lowest Cost
Equipment controlled by a Magneclutch is protected from vibration, chatter and overload, extending its life and reducing its cost of ownership. Two-wire control simplifies installations for direct and easy to maintain remote control. Magneclutch installation time and expense is minimal because bearings and shaft attachments for mounting are included. When all installation, downtime, maintenance, parts, replacement and servicing of other clutch types is considered, the Magneclutch is the lowest cost clutch available.
Best for Test
When products must be observed under dynamic conditions, a Magneclutch is the perfect interface for test equipment. A Magneclutch handles the precise cycles required in production line testing with ease and reliability. It allows precision drive components to be tested with programmed speed-torque functions, and can provide versatile, flexible loads for all types of engineering tests under almost any environmental condition. The linear, two-wire control of every Magneclutch allows automatic control of any test function.
Remote Control
Remote operation is simple with two-wire control and currents usually less than 500ma. The low power transfer allows control placement at a convenient operating point.
Magnebrake
The Magnebrake Advantage
The Magnebrake provides complete control. Complete brake control means managed and regulated braking action to exploit the brake's varied capabilities for superior power transmission. Since Magnebrake action does not involve unstable friction, it provides many new quality advantages.
Continuous Slip
Magnetic force, not rubbing, creates braking torque, so the Magnebrake can slip continuously without wear or loss of holding torque.
Uniform Reversing
Magnebrake torque output is independent of slip speed, so that the torque setting remains constant as the Magnebrake goes from maximum rpm forward to maximum rpm in reverse. Unlike friction brakes, the Magnebrake never chatters or vibrates when reversing.
Uniform Intermittent Motion
Under Magnebrake control, materials subjected to intermittent motions through reciprocating drives, indexing, ratchet or cam action, won't stretch or break. Magnebrakes constant torque and holding force eliminate the uneven "stick-slip" phenomenon inherent in friction brakes.
Tension Control
A Magnebrake makes unwind and payoff tension control simple and straightforward because torque output is directly proportional to current input. Open loop tension systems like roll diameter followers, or closed loop tension systems can utilize a Magnebrake with either digital or analog electronic control techniques.
Long Life
Magnetic attraction and rugged construction make the Magnebrake durable. With no rubbing parts subject to wear, the Magnebrake has a virtually unlimited life expectancy.
Temperature Stability
The Magnebrake eliminates brake fade. Operating at a fixed current, it shows no significant torque variation even over temperature extremes.
Precise Loading
Input current determines torque characteristics. Ramp, taper, trigonometric, exponential and cyclic load functions are simple to obtain.
Clean
The Magnebrake will not contaminate its surroundings with wear products, making it perfect for processing items like surgical dressings, photographic film, or food stuffs.
Smooth
The Magnebrake doesn't subject your material or machinery to jerks, chatter or shake. It allows delicate process adjustment with infinite control.
Quiet
Unlike conventional brakes, the noiseless Magnebrake is welcome in quiet areas like offices, labs and medical facilities. With no sliding or slapping parts, the Magnebrake is a valuable tool in the machine designer's portfolio.
Remote Control
Remote operation is simple with two-wire control and currents usually less than 500ma. The low power transfer allows control placement at a convenient operating point.
